You underestimate the effectiveness of bunker/counter tactics + world class striker.
There were games where it took us 60+ mins to score 1 goal against San Marino. If they had someone to punish us, it'd be a very different result.
Dude how do you think San Marino play now? They bunker and still concede 4 goals per game. How is a Messi going to help the amateur defense and goalkeeping? He might score a few but it will be impossible to hold.

Maradona was something else, winning trophies with Napoli a relegation level club prior to them signing Maradona back when Serie A was the by far the best league, I doubt will ever be repeated. To say Messi has surpassed him just because the later was blessed to come up at Barca at a time when they had generational talent is an insult to football history. The core of that Barca team without Messi won back-to-back Euros and a world cup with Spain!

Messi literally wipes the floor with him in any career achievement or measurement. Apart from goals while on cocaine. People denying this obvious fact are hilarious.
Football doesn't have a clear goat unlike basketball. Pele, Maradona, Messi all are viable candidates. I'd add even Zidane and the 2 Ronaldos (Brazil /Portugese) in there. Except CR7, all of them won World Cups and had good club careers. CR7 has the best club career ever though and won a EUROs.
