Lol if I cared about dumb shit like that I would have legally changed my muslim last name. Truth is I don't even care what people think of American citizens let alone what people think of Albanians from Kosovo or Macedonia or wherever.

My family was in process of changing the surname but then backed because it would've sounded Italian and also it would've split the "fis" connections afterwards ...My surname comes from turkish too , it was a nickname given to the ancessor and it means : quick/fast. He was a kaçak who lived in Pejë (Kosovë) at the time.
But why do you guys even bother speaking about religions , they're all the same except to buddist

It has nothing to do with the west. I just genuinely don't like that we love Skanderbeg but then embraced the religion of the people who killed him and tried to erase our entire language/culture..artan wrote:You guys keep saying you don't care about religion but then you give your own personal opinion on what religion is good and bad. Just be real about it, some of you guys are embarrassed that the majority of Albanians are "Muslim" and looked down upon from the Europe because of it. Huge inferiority complex among Albanians. Obsessed with trying to give this perfect image to the west when clearly it won't happen.

That's such a Catholic thing to sayAlbanian Damien wrote:It has nothing to do with the west. I always saw Scanderbeg as a prince born into an Orthodox who converted to Islam and died as a Catholic. In a weird way he is the perfect embodiment of Albanians.

Well we don't care about religion on a personal level but it still doesn't mean we can't be critical of it, especially when it is detrimental to our national interests.artan wrote:You guys keep saying you don't care about religion but then you give your own personal opinion on what religion is good and bad. Yes it's true that some are embarrassed of us being majority Moslem but that's because most of us grew up in a staunchly secular Albania.

I agree I don't think Skanderbeg was ever overtly religious, he was a strategic general who knew how to make alliances based on faith/religion.Plako wrote:That's such a Catholic thing to sayAlbanian Damien wrote:It has nothing to do with the west. The only difference is he didn't really convert to Islam naturally. It was either say you're muslim or die. At least with the other two, he had somewhat of a choice..
That's the only thing that bugs me. To me, the only reason Albanians call themselves Muslims is based on our tradition/culture. For example if your dad referred to himself as Muslim, so well the son. However, the dad only called himself that because the grandfather did..
That's why it makes no sense for me to continue that chain that started from possibly the worst invaders our land has ever seen..
But now to be fair I will say there is one great aspect of Islam that is often overlooked:
Islam is the only religion that specifically says people of all colors are equal.

I think all religions say that but in Islam they have actually try to live by it. However, the Arabs from the Gulf countries (Qatar, UAE, Bahrain, Saudi) are some of the racist people you'll ever find. They still don't grant any rights whatsoever to the Moslem guest workers from Asia and who basically are indentured servants. Also they believe they are superior to other races especially the infidels.Albanian Damien wrote:Islam is the only religion that specifically says people of all colors are equal.

Yeah, Im more angry than embarassed when Albania is referred to as a Muslim country. A country where religion was banned, and most people dont give a f***, is put on the same rank as Saudi Arabia or Pakistan where they live under Sharia Law. Espcially having lived there and seeing the lack of religiousness first hand. It irritates me when people who arent religious declare a religion because their grandparents declared it.
That has nothing to do with the criticism of it though. Catholicism was the worst religion in the middle ages, now Islam is. Its a matter of fact. Deny it all you want. Unless that religin is reformed (which they dont want) it will be a backwards religion.

Always this f-ing inferiority complex. And I won't even discuss whether it's an inferiority complex or not. If it wasn't, you wouldn't have the need to portray Albania as not being a country where Islam is followed by most people. Not that it matters anyway.
Do your thing and let others do their thing, as long as they're following the law and not trying to give you less freedoms than those which the law has given you.
Islam is the religion professed by most Albanians. Now get over it and let's talk about something else and more important. Like how mobsters are leading our countries.
